The University of Calabar’s Student Union Government has made a remarkable gesture to recognise academic excellence. Blessing Alims, the institution’s first female SUG president, awarded N1 million to Moses Udofia, the overall best graduating student with an impressive 4.92/5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average from the Accounting Department. This award commemorates the institution’s 50th anniversary and 37th convocation.

Alims stated, “In line with my administration’s commitment to academic excellence, I have successfully transferred N1 million to the best graduating student, Moses Udofia from the Accounting Department, with a perfect CGPA of 4.92/5.00.” The Cross River State Commissioner of Finance, Dr Michael Odere, also contributed N500,000 to honour Udofia’s exceptional academic achievements.

Udofia expressed gratitude and encouraged his peers, saying, “I want to say a big thank you to the SUG President, Comrade Blessing Alims, the school management and every student. I also want to encourage others never to give up on their dreams.” He emphasised that the award proves academic excellence is still valued despite the prevalence of mediocrity in the education sector.

In his words, “This award is a testament that academic excellence can still be recognised and celebrated despite the mediocrity in the education sector. To other students, always be committed to whatever you are doing as if your life depends on it, and you will meet success in the end.” This recognition aims to motivate Udofia and inspire other students to strive for excellence
