Students of the University of Lagos residing in private hostels on the main campus in Akaka are up in arms over a sharp increase in fees charged by hostel promoters. Some hostel owners have reportedly hiked their rent by almost 40%, sparking widespread discontent among students.

When Vanguard sought the university’s official position on the matter, the Head of Communication Unit, Alhaja Adejoke Alaga Ibraheem, responded with a message, saying, “Good evening, sir. Kindly state your enquiry in clear terms to communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng. Thank you, sir.”
It is gathered that the university management has not yet determined the fees for official hostels for the new session, which may further exacerbate the situation. As students await a resolution, many are left wondering how they will cope with the increased financial burden.
