The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation in Montreal has launched a groundbreaking three-year initiative to transform palliative care at the MUHC, improving the lives of patients and their loved ones.
The C$3 million ($2 million) campaign, which kicked off recently, will focus on advancing research, expanding specialized training for healthcare providers, and enhancing programs that prioritize patient comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
Inspired by the pioneering work of Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of modern hospice care, and Dr. Balfour Mount, who introduced her vision to Canada, the campaign aims to revolutionize the culture of care for individuals affected by serious illness.
By supporting innovative research and education initiatives, the MUHC Foundation hopes to make a significant impact on the lives of patients and their families.
According to Marie-Hélène Laramée, MUHC president and CEO, “The MUHC Foundation has worked closely with Dr. Saunders to build this campaign, supporting research and education efforts to transform the culture of care for people affected by serious illness, at any stage of their treatment.
We are committed to providing compassionate and patient-centered care, and this campaign is a major step forward in achieving that goal.”
Laramée also honored Dr. Balfour Mount’s legacy, stating, “We’re very proud to honor Dr. Balfour Mount and his profound belief that palliative care is about more than medicine—it’s about living fully, with dignity, comfort, and compassion. His vision has inspired countless healthcare professionals, and we are grateful for his contributions to the field of palliative care.”
