The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has resumed its suspended indefinite strike due to the government’s failure to honour previous agreements. According to the union’s chairman, Dr Peter Adamu, the strike is a result of the Kaduna State Government’s breach of trust and failure to meet the union’s demands.
The demands include non-payment of withheld salaries, earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, and non-remittance of pension contributions. Other demands are the implementation of wage awards, subscription to group life assurance for workers, and restoration of university autonomy.
Adamu stated, “Due to the government’s failure to meet our demands, we were left with no choice but to resume the industrial action.” He expressed the union’s determination to ensure that the government meets their demands before returning to duty.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities in the university. Adamu emphasised the union’s resolve, saying, “We are determined to ensure that the government meets their demands before we return to duty.” The union’s action highlights the ongoing tensions between ASUU and the Kaduna State Government over workers’ welfare and university autonomy
