The Federal University, Lokoja, has been shut down indefinitely following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of five students on Monday, February 17, 2025. The students, who were reportedly travelling in a commercial vehicle, were killed in a trailer accident at the Feidiya area, a notorious black spot along the Lohkoja-Abuja highway. The accident sparked widespread protests among their colleagues, who blocked the highway and demanded justice for the victims.
Angered by the incident, students took to the streets on Tuesday, barricading the university gates and disrupting academic activities. Despite interventions from the Kogi State Government and appeals from the university management, the students continued their protest, calling for improved safety measures along the highway.
In a circular issued by the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Mrs. Rebecca Okojie, the university stated, “In light of the tragic loss of five students in a trailer accident at Feidiya city centre on Monday, February 17, 2025, and considering the escalating situation, the Vice-Chancellor, in consultation with the management and on behalf of the Senate, has decided to close the university indefinitely.”
The directive mandated students to vacate both campuses by 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025, for their safety and to prevent further unrest. The university management also promised to work with the state government to improve safety measures along the highway and prevent future accidents.
The Student Union Government (SUG) President, Benjamin Timothy, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and lamented the frequent road accidents involving students. “In the last two months alone, 12 students have lost their lives in similar incidents involving trucks. This is unacceptable, and we demand that the authorities take immediate action to address this issue,” he said.
During a protest at the Feidiya Campus, Timothy warned, “We have given the authorities 72 hours to address these incessant killings, or we will take to the streets in full force. We will block the Abuja-Lagos highway and ensure that our voices are heard.”
He emphasised that students could no longer remain passive while trucks continued to claim the lives of their peers. “The five students who died on Monday have brought the death toll to 12 in just two months. We cannot sit back and watch as our colleagues are killed like chickens. We demand justice, and we demand it now,” Timothy said.
