Bayero University, Kano (BUK) is set to host its 39th convocation ceremony from February 12 to 15, 2025, with a staggering budget of over N100 million to accommodate dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The four-day event will kick off on Wednesday, February 12, with the award of degrees, diplomas, and certificates, while the grand finale on Saturday, February 15, will feature the award of honorary degrees.
According to Vice Chancellor Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, “the budget of hosting the 39th convocation was the most expensive in history,” attributing the cost to inflation. Abbas disclosed that a large percentage of the expenses would go towards accommodating dignitaries and multiple publications.
This year’s convocation will see 176 undergraduate students receive first-class degrees out of 8,769 graduates from 18 faculties. Additionally, 275 postgraduate students will receive PhD degrees, 2,590 will receive master’s degrees, and 535 will receive postgraduate diplomas.
The honorary doctorate degrees will be awarded to Col. Sani Bello (Rtd.), former military Governor of Kano State, and Alh. Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, owner of A A Rano Nigeria Limited and Rano Air.
Three renowned professors from the university will also be decorated with distinguished emeritus professor status: Professor Garba Dahuwa Azare, Professor Julius Afolabi Falola, and Professor Musa Mohammed Borodo.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Abbas expressed his pride in the achievements of the university, saying, “We are proud of our graduates, who have worked hard to achieve their academic goals. We are also grateful to our staff, who have dedicated themselves to teaching, research, and community service.”
The Vice Chancellor also appreciated the support of the university’s stakeholders, including the government, parents, and the community, saying, “We could not have achieved this milestone without the support of our stakeholders. We are grateful for their trust and confidence in us.”
The convocation ceremony will be attended by dignitaries from across the country, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to deliver a keynote address.
The event will also feature a range of activities, including a convocation lecture, a cultural night, and a grand finale ceremony, where the honorary doctorate degrees will be awarded.
