Emmanuel Gambo, a 22-year-old student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), was arrested on Monday by the Enugu State Police Command for the alleged murder of Deborah Sam-Praise Ememem, a fellow undergraduate, after a sexual encounter and a disagreement over N15,000.
The suspect, a second-year student of Material and Metallurgical Engineering, booked into a motel in Obukpa with the deceased on the evening of June 14, 2025, according to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command spokesperson.
According to reports, the deceased wanted an extra N15,000 after receiving N5,000 during a second round of intercourse, which allegedly sparked trouble.
As the fight got out of hand, Gambo killed her by strangulation.
The suspect covered the victim’s body with a curtain and a towel before hiding it beneath the bed in an attempt to hide the crime.
On June 16, hotel employees noticed a bad smell and found the decaying body.
After a thorough police investigation, the suspect—who had used a fictitious identity and an unreachable phone number at check-in—was located and taken into custody at his lodge on July 2, 2025.
The suspect was found to be in possession of the deceased’s headphones, Redmi tablet, and iPhone.
Mamman Bitrus Giwa, the Commissioner of Police, praised the detectives’ work and advised parents to keep a tight eye on their kids while cautioning young people against social vices.
