In an effort to help Ukraine before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month, the US has promised $5.9 billion in budgetary and military aid.

Trump’s return has raised questions about whether U.S. assistance for Ukraine will continue at the same level as it did under former President Joe Biden. Trump has continuously criticised aid for Ukraine.

There was only a short window of time left for the billions of dollars in previously approved aid to be distributed, as Trump’s inauguration is in just three weeks.

“Today, I am proud to announce nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression,” Biden said in a statement.

The $1.25 billion military drawdown included in the package enables the Pentagon to swiftly deploy weapons from US stockpiles to combat zones.

The Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which purchases military hardware from allies or the defence sector, will provide an additional $1.22 billion.

The most recent drawdown, according to the US State Department, included spare parts, optically guided missiles, anti-tank weapons systems, drones, ammo for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, HIMARS, and air-to-ground munitions.

Meanwhile, the Treasury Department declared that $3.4 billion in direct budgetary assistance for Ukraine had been disbursed.

According to the departing official, following lengthy negotiations, his administration has already distributed all of the funds for Ukraine aid that Congress appropriated in the spring of this year.

He went on to say that he has directed his government to continue providing Ukraine with as much military assistance as possible, including older US equipment, and to deliver it to the battlefield as Ukraine loses territory to the Russian troops that invaded in February 2022.

“Together with the security assistance America is providing Ukraine and Treasury’s actions to further tighten sanctions on Russia’s war machine, we will continue to do everything in our power to position Ukraine to achieve a just peace,” Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen said in a statement.
