The U.S. Army has eliminated a senior leader of Hurras al-Din, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, which had declared its dissolution in January.

According to CENTCOM, its forces on February 23 “conducted a precision airstrike in Northwest Syria, targeting and killing Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, the senior military leader of the terrorist organization Hurras al-Din”.

CENTCOM reported that since Hurras al-Din’s announcement of its dissolution, multiple leaders of the group have been killed by U.S. airstrikes.

One such airstrike took place on February 22, eliminating Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, another leader of the organization, which is recognized by the U.S. as a terrorist group.

The U.S. military’s presence in Syria is part of a coalition formed in 2014 to combat ISIS extremists.

This follows the December 2024 overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad by “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” in Damascus.
