Nigeria is one of the top 20 nations in the world for having obtained green cards, or visas for permanent residence in the United States.

The US Department of Homeland Security’s 2022 data indicates that this is covered in BusinessDay reports.

According to the data, 12,385 PR were given to Nigerians throughout the reviewed period in order for them to immigrate to the United States.

Comparatively, the data showed that the top two countries from which new permanent residents are obtained are Mexico and India.

265,784 people from these two nations made up 26 percent of all new permanent residents.

A more thorough examination of the statistics revealed that 1,018,349 immigrants worldwide were granted permanent residence permits, with 82,117 of those permits going to citizens of Africa.

7,529 people who were the direct relatives of American citizens received PR visas; 818 people were admitted through family-sponsored preferences; 3,213 people were admitted through employment-based preferences; 14 people were admitted through diversity programs; 797 people were admitted as refugees and asylees; and 14 people were admitted through other broad classes of admission.

In terms of asylum, Nigeria saw 259 people positively granted refuge in 2022—a substantial rise from 61 in 2013.

Nigeria had 9,545 naturalized citizens in 2013, and by 2022, that number had increased to 14,438.

In a related move, the US Department of State declared on Thursday that it has granted all visas under the Employment-Based Fourth Preference (EB-4) classification for the 2024 fiscal year (FY).

“The State Department, working in close collaboration with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is pleased to announce the issuance of all available visas in the Employment-Based Fourth Preference (EB-4) category for fiscal year (FY) 2024,” it said.

The phenomenon known as “Japa syndrome” is the result of a surge in the desire to emigrate among Nigerians, particularly the youth.

Based on available data, the number of Nigerians living outside of the United States has increased drastically over the past four years in the United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, and other nations.
