US President Donald Trump has imposed a 15% tariff on Nigeria and several other African countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Mauritius, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, and Madagascar. The new tariffs, effective August 7, aim to reduce trade deficits and promote US manufacturing.
According to the White House statement, the executive order titled “Further Modifying the Reciprocal Tariff Rates” states, “These modifications shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m.”
The US has also imposed higher tariffs on some countries, including:
– Countries with 30% tariffs:
– South Africa
– Libya
– Countries with 25% tariffs:
– Tunisia
– India
– Countries with 10% tariffs:
– United Kingdom
Other countries affected by the tariffs include Japan, with a 15% tariff. The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise has warned of potential economic consequences for Nigeria, citing adverse impacts on trade and inflation.
