President Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk suffered a blow Tuesday when voters in Wisconsin elected Susan Crawford to the state Supreme Court, upholding the court’s liberal 4-3 majority. Musk had supported her conservative opponent.

The Brennan Center at New York University claims that the election was viewed as an early referendum on Trump’s leadership and that, with over $90 million spent by the candidates, state parties, and outside organizations, the campaign easily became the most costly legal battle in US history.

Conservative Brad Schimel, a former Republican state attorney general and county court, lost to Crawford, a county judge, after conceding in a phone conversation with Crawford and in front of his supporters.

With 75% of the vote counted, Crawford was ahead by 55% to 45%, or about 178,000 votes.

Musk and his affiliated political organizations spent over $21 million to back Schimel because the court’s balance was on the line.

Crawford was accused of framing the race as a competition between the billionaire from out of state and herself.

“I’ve got to tell you, as a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never could have imagined that I’d be taking on the richest man in the world for justice and Wisconsin. And we won,” Crawford said.
