The United States has proposed a joint security arrangement for Ukraine that mirrors NATO’s mutual defense model, but would operate independently of the alliance, a diplomatic insider revealed on Saturday.
The concept emerged during a conference call that included US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and a group of European leaders.
This discussion followed a summit held in Alaska on Friday between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As per the source, the U.S. introduced the idea of “a non-NATO Article 5-style commitment” as part of a more comprehensive security plan for Ukraine—something Trump reportedly brought up in his dialogue with Putin.
Under NATO’s Article 5, an assault on one allied nation is treated as an attack on the entire group, forming the basis of the alliance’s collective defense structure.
This new proposal was first mentioned in a private conversation between Trump and Zelensky while the U.S. president was en route from Alaska. The suggestion was later reiterated during the joint call involving European leaders, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Another individual familiar with the talks confirmed the discussion of NATO-style commitments but voiced doubts, saying:
“Nobody is clear how such a system would function, or why Putin, who rejects NATO outright, would accept any mechanism that effectively safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
Ukraine’s aspiration to join NATO remains a major sticking point for Moscow in the ongoing conflict, and several Western nations are still hesitant to endorse Kyiv’s full integration into the alliance. Trump has repeatedly opposed Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Zelensky is scheduled to visit Washington on Monday for a face-to-face meeting with Trump. According to the diplomatic contact, their discussions are likely to focus on options for a potential meeting involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky, the future involvement of European stakeholders in peace negotiations, and possible security and territorial agreements.
