On Wednesday, the Pentagon announced that the United States will begin removing transgender troops from the military unless they secure a waiver on an individual basis.
The memo, which became public as part of a court filing, was issued in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order from late January, which sought to prohibit transgender individuals from serving in the military.
“Service members who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service,” the memo said.
According to the memo, troops may be eligible for a waiver on a case-by-case basis, but only if there is a compelling government interest in retaining the service member, and this interest directly contributes to war-fighting capabilities.
To qualify for a waiver, service members must prove they have never attempted to transition and must show 36 consecutive months of stability in their gender without significant distress or issues in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Earlier this month, another Pentagon memo was issued that prohibited transgender individuals from enlisting and halted gender transition treatments for those already serving in the military.
The new memo also stated that applicants for military service with a current diagnosis, history of, or symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria are disqualified from service. This includes individuals who have undergone cross-sex hormone therapy or sex reassignment surgeries.
