The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned candidates sitting for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) against “desperately selecting examination towns.”. ¹ Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for JAMB, emphasized that the board does not assign examination towns to candidates but rather allows them to choose their preferred locations.

Benjamin noted that 90% of available spaces for the optional mock examination have been filled, leaving only a few states with remaining slots. He warned candidates against selecting examination towns without considering the implications, stating, “JAMB has observed unusual preferences among candidates regarding their choice of examination towns, likely in an effort to participate in the optional mock examination.”

Benjamin advised candidates to choose their examination towns carefully, saying, “This notice aims to advise candidates against desperately selecting examination towns, only to later accuse the Board of assigning them to towns far from their residences, towns, or states.” He listed the states with remaining slots for the optional mock examination as Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.

While emphasising the importance of careful selection, Benjamin reminded candidates that they have the right to choose their preferred examination towns. However, he cautioned that the board should not be held responsible for decisions made by candidates, stating, “The board allocates mock examination spaces for candidates to select based on the availability of mock examination centres, and once a town’s capacity is reached, it will no longer be available for selection.

Benjamin concluded by encouraging candidates to choose their examination towns thoughtfully, considering travel logistics and convenience. He said, “Candidates are encouraged to choose their examination towns consciously with travel logistics and convenience in mind, ensuring a smoother experience on examination day.
