Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) has announced plans to celebrate its 50th Anniversary alongside its 42nd Convocation Ceremony, a landmark moment in the institution’s history.
The week-long event, scheduled from Monday, September 1, to Saturday, September 6, 2025, will feature academic, cultural, humanitarian, and technological activities designed to showcase the university’s legacy and vision for the future.
At a press briefing, the Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, Prof. Bashiru Garba, revealed the graduation statistics. “A total of 4,024 students will be graduating this year. Out of this number, 119 students earned first-class honors. The graduands also include 3,561 undergraduates, 463 postgraduates, and 120 PhD holders,” he said.
Prof. Garba reflected on the institution’s five-decade journey, commending its progress in scholarship, research, and service to society. “The university has continued to grow in leaps and bounds over the past 50 years. Our commitment remains anchored on academic excellence, impactful research, and community service,” he stated
He also paid tribute to those who laid the foundation of the university. “We must acknowledge the immense contributions of past administrators, staff, students, and stakeholders who have shaped UDUS into the citadel of learning it is today,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
As part of the anniversary, UDUS will confer honorary degrees on two eminent Nigerians: Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa and former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Faruku Yahaya (Rtd.). The university will also bestow the title of Emeritus Professor on Prof. Dejo Abdulrahman in recognition of his academic impact.
In addition, the university announced that some of its key infrastructure would be immortalized by naming them after notable personalities who have contributed significantly to its development.
Prof. Garba described the dual celebration as both historic and forward-looking. “The 50th Anniversary and 42nd Convocation Ceremony represent not only our achievements but also our aspirations for the future. UDUS will continue to uphold its values while preparing the next generation of leaders,” he affirmed
