Prof. Isaac Itodo, the vice-chancellor of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), has expressed alarm about the institution’s significant security issues, which include kidnapping, herdsmen invasions, and the widespread theft of school property, including armored cables.

Itodo emphasized the increasing animosity from the host community, which he claimed has had a detrimental effect on the university, during a press briefing held in advance of the 26th-31st simultaneous convocation ceremony, which is set for March 27–29, 2025.

He gave his word that steps are being taken to resolve the problems, including building a perimeter fence to improve security.

The VC brought attention to the recent kidnapping of three female students, which resulted in the university’s indefinite shutdown. He clarified that after a comprehensive evaluation, security professionals had found further security flaws that must be fixed before the school can reopen.

“We are implementing several measures, including the construction of a dedicated Security Department building, which is slated for completion in a few weeks. This will ensure the safety of staff and students upon resumption,” he stated.

In order to preserve campus harmony and promote scientific research, the vice-chancellor underlined the university’s dedication to collaborating with the Benue State Government, security forces, and the host community.

Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to openness and responsible resource management.

More than 9,000 students, including those from the university’s sandwich program who were previously disqualified for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, will graduate at the next convocation event.

Additionally, it will include the commissioning of important infrastructure projects including the recently built security department building, a specialized plant health laboratory, and a teaching and research farm.

Itodo urged the federal government to build a perimeter fence around the university, emphasizing that it would protect students and faculty while also advancing commercial agriculture and research activities on campus.
