Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has called for restraint in response to growing calls by some Ghanaians for Nigerians to be deported.
Speaking during a joint press conference in Ghana on Wednesday, the minister reassured the public that there was no immediate threat or reason for panic over the situation.
She explained that her visit to Ghana was prompted by circulating videos that stirred concern and tension, prompting her to assess the reality on the ground.
Since her arrival, she noted that she had not witnessed any demonstrations involving burning of tyres or widespread protests demanding the removal of Nigerians.
She added that the calm atmosphere indicated that both the Ghanaian government and the country’s president had taken steps to manage the situation effectively.
“I would say there’s no cause for alarm, they are handling the situation effectively, and we will continue engaging stakeholders. We have met with some of the leaders and individuals involved in a bid to de-escalate tensions,” she said.
