Mr. Ewaoche Benjamin Obe, a former African Action Congress (AAC) candidate for governor of Benue State in the 2023 election, was kicked out of his Abuja home after it was purportedly used as security for a loan by his wife.
According to information obtained by ZINGTIE, the lawmaker constructed the home in Sagwari Layout in Dutse, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT.
Obe and his wife, Christiana Obe, got married in 2006. The couple was from Benue State’s Ogbadibo Local Government Area (LGA).
Information on the incident’s date and time was acquired on Saturday, September 25, 2024, on a Wednesday.
While travelling to Benue State, Obe got a call informing him that some security personnel had broken into his Abuja home and were starting to remove him from it.
The politician quickly performed a U-turn on the Keffi road in Nasarawa State, expressing his anger at the story.
When he got back to the property, he was given a court document that said the house had been seized because his wife had taken out an overdue loan on it.
However, Obe claimed to ZINGTIE when he arrived at the scene that he had never received a court order until the day the security guards broke into his home.
Obe’s belongings were strewn all over the street of Sagwari Layout, and some police officers and armed military personnel were visible at the site.
Obe occasionally said to our correspondent, alluding to his wife, “She has done her worse.” I used my hard-earned money to build this house.
Obe said on Facebook Live that his wife broke into his home with the help of some police, questioning why a court could take property without giving notice.
When asked if he had heard from the lenders at the time the loan was taken out, Obe replied that he had no idea the wife had taken out a loan and that he had never heard from them before the purported transaction.
He further revealed that, before the incident, his son had been taken away by his wife, presumably to a new flat.
In addition, he denied receiving any court documents before the eviction.
“I was never served. This was plotted by my wife and the officers that came. We have been having issues for a while and I think this is her best way of getting at me,” he said.
It was learnt that Christiana, a Nigerian Air Force officer, had transferred some of her belongings—including air conditioners—out of the residence before being forced to leave.
Obe pretended he didn’t want to cause a commotion, so she left uncontested.
The court documents served during the eviction were retrieved by our correspondent in the interim. The claimant was reported to have been a tenant in the aforementioned duplex in the court filing.
A family member who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Ewaoche (Obe) has invested a lot in this woman, even the job she currently has came from him. He saw this woman through school and has invested in her life in so many other ways. How do you connive with external persons to bring down a man you have lived with for more than two decades? How?.
“From the look of things, it is clear this is a clear case of oppression. Assuming this happened to a woman, we will say is because “na woman. This is a direct opposite. How can wife take a loan without informing the husband? Why did the lender not call to get details from property owner? Who values a house without a man who owns it? Something is seriously missing in all these.
“We gathered that the court papers are all fake and the people commissioned to carry out the eviction were mobilized illegally. We want the Air Force and the police to investigate the officers in the video.”
Christiana only replied, “I am not under any obligation to speak to anyone,” when ZINGTIE approached her.
