The evacuation of a departed relative was delayed for several hours at a local mortuary on Friday, leaving a family from the Western region deeply frustrated and perplexed.

Residents and bystanders were drawn to the dramatic picture that emerged from what was supposed to be a routine process of gathering the body and starting the journey home for burial.

Eyewitnesses and an online video claim that the family had come early in the morning to retrieve their loved one’s body.

Nevertheless, the bus intended to convey the body failed to start shortly after it was loaded into the vehicle. The driver tried igniting the engine several times, but to no avail.

Visibly upset, the mourners made the decision to take the body out of the car in an attempt to comprehend what was going on.

Some were observed kneeling next to the casket in accordance with cultural customs followed in Nyanza and Western Kenya, appealing and conversing with the departed. Despite their best efforts, the situation did not improve right away, which caused the family members to become increasingly tense. They started to fear the worst because they thought the deceased had not “accepted” the trip home.

Traditional answers started to surface from the group’s elders throughout the tense standoff, which lasted over six hours.

In some Western and Nyanza cultures, it is said that a departed person may spiritually “reject” being sent home if there are unresolved C problems surrounding their burial or if the delegation carrying the body includes someone who caused their grief. Such instances are frequently interpreted by families as an indication that a specific person should not accompany the body or because the burial place is disputed, dirty, or goes against the wishes of the deceased.

In this instance, several elders speculated that the occurrence might have been caused by unresolved property conflicts or the involvement of a controversial family member.

Others thought that relatives might have disregarded the deceased’s specified burial desires.

The situation seemed to improve after hours of discussions, prayers, and customary rites carried out by the elders. The mourners were emotionally relieved when the car eventually caught fire.

After that, the body was put back into the bus, and the group continued traveling in the direction of Nyanza, where funeral arrangements were already in progress.

In many communities in the area, where traditional values and spiritual interpretations are still deeply ingrained, such occurrences are taken seriously even when they have no scientific explanation. In order to prevent such circumstances, elders frequently counsel families to resolve internal problems prior to the day of burial.

The episode has generated a lot of discussion on the internet. Some Kenyans regard it as a cultural reminder of the significance of respecting the wishes of the deceased, while others perceive it as a mechanical coincidence based on traditional belief systems. However, as they make ready to bury their loved one, the process continues to be a memorable and emotionally draining chapter for the impacted family.
