In an attempt to vent his displeasure with the job market and his personal challenges, a Nigerian graduate set fire to his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, sparking intense online debate.
The young man, who has not been named, revealed in a video that has gone viral that he attended university for seven years and graduated with a second class lower, earning a GPA of 3.4, which is just below the 3.5 required for a second class upper.
He felt constantly unlucky as a result of this disappointment. He had always wanted to be a singer, but after facing challenges in that field, he sought a more stable career in the corporate world.
When he was offered a salary of ₦95,000 at a job interview, he realized that ₦60,000 would be used for transportation, leaving him with little left over. This was the tipping point for him.
He displayed his dissatisfaction with his situation and the status of the country by burning his academic and NYSC credentials in a fit of rage.
“No regret because why me with 3.4 GPA and 2.5 GPA graduate gather dey second class? I’m always depressed anytime I remember how unlucky I was graduating with 3.4 GPA; so let it go to hell. This country would turn you to a mad person,” he noted.
Social media is ablaze with responses to the incident.
