Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the late head of the Afenifere, explained how the news of his death would be publicized in a video that went viral on Tuesday.
He was heard saying in the video, which included his voice and that of a woman who was identified as his daughter saying, “Ayo Adenbanjo, leader of Afenifere, the controversial man, is gone. He died at the age of 90-something. He spoke last to his daughter.”
On Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the renowned head of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, died quietly at home in Lekki, Lagos.
Adebanjo was a well-known Nigerian lawyer and patriot who was born in Ijebu Ogbu Oke, Ogun State, on April 10, 1928. He was one of the first members of Afenifere, which was founded in 1993 after the June 12, 1993, presidential election was canceled.
He was a lifelong supporter of democracy, fairness, and genuine federalism in Nigeria.
