The terrible attack on a lawyer near Abuja’s Gudu Market has rocked Nigeria’s legal community and sparked grave worries about the security of attorneys performing their jobs.
A group of young guys are shown viciously assaulting the lawyer as he tries to serve court proceedings at ITEMS Plaza in a viral video that TheNigeriaLawyer exclusively obtained.
In the unsettling video, the attackers use Pidgin English to accuse the lawyer of “hitting a woman.” One of them yells, “You dey hit the woman!” before slapping the victim many times. The lawyer felt physically overpowered as he attempted to back away toward his red Toyota Camry.
When he tried to protect himself, a brief skirmish broke out, and women who were filming the incident yelled things like, “Where is the man’s child? “Who sent you?” contributed to the tumultuous scene.
The lawyer was not the attacker, according to the eyewitnesses who captured the incident on camera, and he had merely gone to carry out his official duties. But as the lawyer was serving the legal documents, the attack broke out suddenly. The specifics of the legal matter at hand, along with the identities of the attorney and the intended receivers, are not made public.
Although the lawyer’s health has not been disclosed, police are said to have arrived after the assault and taken him to a nearby station. As of the time of writing, The Nigeria Lawyer’s attempts to get a response from the Nigerian Bar Association and the Abuja Police Command had failed.
Within the legal world, the episode has provoked a great deal of indignation and reflection. Many attorneys questioned why they took on the job of bailiff, which is typically reserved for court staff.
Whille speaking on condition of anonymity, a a senior advocate who reviewed the video said, “This incident highlights the dangers lawyers face when serving court processes alone in volatile environments.”
Lawyers are now being advised by their peers to refrain from delivering court documents alone, particularly in hostile or tense locations. They emphasize that delivering legal documents is not a lawyer’s primary responsibility and advise using law enforcement or authorized court bailiffs to assure safety.
