Following her colleagues’ statement of support, Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, broke down in tears at plenary on Monday.
When the other lawmakers applauded her during the session, the emotional Speaker was seen crying excitedly.
The contest for the Lagos Assembly Speaker’s seat between Meranda and the previously impeached Mudashiru Obasa took a new turn on Monday when Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS) security personnel sealed the offices of the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, her deputy, and the clerk, according to ZINGTIE.
Early on Monday, DSS officers with guns broke into the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, limiting access to the offices. Armed guards had taken full control by 10 a.m., conducting thorough checks on all individuals entering the premises.
The Assembly was rocked by Obasa’s impeachment, and the former Speaker refused to have him removed.
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly voted in favor of Speaker Meranda after the security forces’ incursion on Monday, amid widespread speculation that she could step down.
Oladipo Ajomale, the legislator for Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, made the motion, reaffirming the assembly’s confidence in Meranda’s ability to lead.
Gbolahan Ogunleye of Ikorodu Constituency 1 seconded the proposal.
The Speaker was seen crying on tape as the outpouring of sympathy from her peers overwhelmed her.
