After serving more than 20 years in prison after being given a death sentence in 2003, he was released.
Due to a stolen generator case, Kolawole Oladeji, a Nigerian man who had been detained since 1999, was released.
After serving more than 20 years in prison after being given a death sentence in 2003, he was released.
Ogbona Igbojionu, who was convicted with Oladeji, was also freed. TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, also known as Seaking, raised awareness of their case and advocated for their release.
After a generator that had reportedly been stolen was brought to Oladeji’s factory for repairs, he was taken into custody in October 30, 1999.
He insisted on his innocence, but on January 14, 2003, he was found guilty alongside three others and given a hanging death sentence.
He asserted that Segun Ajibade, the primary offender, was released from prison in 2016 by Ibikunle Amosun, the governor of Ogun State at the time. “I have been in jail since 1999 for a crime I did not commit. I am a generator repairer.” Oladeji stated.
After his lawyer withdrew the lawsuit, the Court of Appeal in Ibadan denied his appeal in 2018. Oladeji begged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for pardon in November 2020, asking for forgiveness and the opportunity to be with his family again.
More than 20 years on death row have come to an end with his release, underscoring the protracted wait in justice in his case.
