Nigeria Police and Air Force personnel clashed Tuesday over the custody of alleged online fraudsters, also referred to as Yahoo guys, at the Air Force Base in Jeddo, Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State.
According to reports, some Air Force soldiers stationed at the facility attacked police officers who were part of the Quick Response Squad, or QRS.
The QRS operatives, while on a crime prevention patrol, flagged down a Toyota Corolla with registration number AKD-73-FL. But when they saw the cops, the people inside the car ran away. After pursuing and apprehending Ibohama Precious, a 25-year-old suspect, the officers found what they believed to be hard narcotics, Canadian loud, and Indian hemp.
The cops were halted at an Air Force checkpoint in Jeddo while en route to the police station with the suspect and the confiscated things. There was a violent conflict between the two security agencies when the police officers allegedly refused to release the suspect when the Air Force troops demanded it.
Olufemi Abaniwonda, the commissioner of police for Delta State, denounced the assault on the cops and claimed it was unprovoked.
He stated, ““The command is aware of the embarrassing situation in Jeddo, where personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, without any provocation, attacked police officers who were performing their lawful duties.”
He emphasized that the occurrence is especially regrettable because the Nigerian Air Force, Navy, Army, and other security forces in the state have maintained a close working relationship.
“The Police and Air Force authorities are investigating the matter and implementing measures to prevent a recurrence of such an embarrassing situation,” Abaniwonda added.
The Nigerian Air Force has declared that its members who were involved in the incident with QRS operatives are now the subject of disciplinary actions.
The matter has been addressed decisively, according to a press release issued Thursday by Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters.
Akinboyewa claims that in order to settle the issue and improve interagency cooperation, the commander of the affected NAF unit has contacted the appropriate Delta State police authority.
He added that the NAF members involved were being disciplined in line with military standards, and that the wounded police officers had been given medical assistance.
