The founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, recently gave a sermon that sparked a contentious discussion among Nigerian Christians over the role and appropriate application of tithes in the church.

Discussions concerning whether tithing is still a legitimate practice in contemporary Christianity have been the subject of the viral video. Public personalities like television icon Daddy Freeze have publicly disapproved of tithing, claiming it is misunderstood and unbiblical.

However, Pastor Chris clarified in the sermon that tithes are not intended for charitable purposes and should not be utilized to support impoverished people or struggling family members. He holds that the tithe is solely God’s and ought to be given to the church in line with the Bible.

“You see, God has his ways of doing things. He told you to take your tithe to the house of God; He didn’t say you should give it to your grandmother,” he said.

He continued by saying that it is improper to use tithes for any other purpose outside of the church, regardless of how admirable one’s intentions may be.

“You cannot use your tithe to do good… That tithe belongs to God. It’s not yours to redirect.”

Pastor Chris described the “first fruit” as a sacred duty that shouldn’t be redistributed, underscoring the connection between the tithing principle and divine order and prosperity.

“You cannot give your tithe to a suffering person… He lays claim to the first fruit, and that is your assurance of prosperity.”
