In Abia State, public outrage has erupted due to troubling reports of an alleged sexual assault on a 16-year-old student by a school gateman within a private school in Aba.

Reports indicate that the incident took place at De Born Grate School, situated on Umuosi Road close to Ibadan Road in Aba. As per sources and social media accounts, the purported assailant is the school’s gatekeeper, who is said to be related to the owner of the school.

Witnesses and citizens expressed concern as they reported that the young girl was swiftly taken to a hospital in Aba, where she received urgent medical care. The incident was reported to the police by her parents without delay, which led to a case investigation.

To make the controversy worse, some allege that the owner of the school tried to sway the investigation. The owner is said to have requested a transfer of the case from Aba to Umuahia, citing personal connections. Nonetheless, these assertions have not undergone independent verification.

The incident has generated extensive online denunciation, as numerous Nigerians have voiced their outrage over the event and demanded justice for the young girl.

In Nigeria, sexual assault in schools is increasingly worrying, prompting specialists to highlight the necessity for enhanced safety protocols, routine background investigations of school personnel, and effective abuse reporting systems to safeguard children and adolescents.

An official statement from the Abia State Police Command regarding the investigation has not yet been issued, but it is reported that local authorities are taking measures to ensure justice is served. At the same time, parents in the community have voiced serious worries about the safety of students enrolled in private schools throughout the state.

This unfortunate event has once more brought to the forefront pressing issues regarding the safety of schools, accountability, and the obligations of school proprietors to safeguard their students’ well-being.
