Former US Vice President Kamla Harris was seen shopping at a grocery store on Thursday, January 23, with her husband, Doug Emhoff, amid reports of a divorce.
However, it was the bags she used to carry the groceries that caught people’s attention online. After supporting a plastic ban during the 2019 US presidential campaign, Harris was spotted carrying plastic bags.
Following her appearance at the 99 Ranch Market Asian Grocery store in California, the 60-year-old was referred to as a “hypocrite” by online users.
A video of the couple conversing, grinning at one another, and buying at the store became viral online.
A comment made by an X user when the video became viral online, “Why is she using plastic bags?” Meanwhile, another wrote, “Is that Kamala toting a plastic bag of groceries??? What an out-of-touch HYPOCRITE with zero self-awareness.”
The 49th US vice president was being made fun of by some for having a life outside of the office. “Oh, she is capable of going shopping like normal people? What a surprise!” an X user wrote. Meanwhile, another said, “She finally realised how high she made grocery prices.”
A few of the store employees recognised Harris and requested pictures. The pair posed and smiled.
Harris backed a ban on plastic straws at a CNN town hall in 2019. She stated, “We do need to ban the plastic,” adding that pepper straws needed to be improved.
Following rumours of a possible divorce and arguments following Harris’ defeat in the 2024 US presidential election, the couple was sighted together.
According to sources cited in the publications, Harris blamed her husband Emhoff for the loss, and those close to the couple said that things were not going well between them.
