An Ebonyi State young Nigerian woman has described her terrifying experience working as a househelp in Lagos.
She talked about the harassment and abuse she received from her madam in an emotional discussion on the Adult Gist Podcast at 14:32.
“Anytime I asked someone to help me, I begged her to take me home,” she said, sharing her experience,
“she would make enemies with that person when they tried to approach her.” After that, she would enter and begin assaulting me.
She said the abuse was emotional as well as physical.
She disclosed that the only times she felt relieved were when her employer’s husband got home from work.
“When the husband comes back, that’s when I will start wearing good clothes and eating alongside the children,” she added.
Having to stay up all night to make sure the kids were comfortable was one of the most agonizing experiences she could recollect.
“Sometimes, when there is no light, I’ll kneel down from night to morning and fan the children so they will not feel heat,” she revealed.
Her experience contributes to the rising number of domestic violence situations that Nigerian domestic workers are dealing with.
Many suffer in silence because they are afraid, stigmatized, or lack support, especially young girls from low-income families.
