Speaking on a hot mic, President Joe Biden admitted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that they needed to have a “come-to-Jesus meeting.”
Speaking to Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet on the House floor after his State of Union speech on Thursday night, Biden made the remark.
Bennet gave Biden kudos for his speech and urged him to continue applying pressure on Israel on humanitarian concerns.
Using the leader of the Jewish state’s moniker, Biden replied to Bennet that he had informed Bibi that they needed to have a “come-to-Jesus meeting.”
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a “come-to-Jesus moment” is “a sudden realization, comprehension, or recognition that often precipitates a major change.”
An aide quickly cut the president off, alerting him that his comments were being recorded on a hot mic.
Biden remarked, “I’m on a hot mic here. Good. That’s good.”
As Israel maintains its siege of the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of over 30,000 people—many of them civilians—Biden’s remarks suggest that he is becoming increasingly irritated with the Israeli prime minister.
According to UN experts, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are on the verge of hunger because Israel won’t allow additional humanitarian access.
Biden attempted to strike a careful balance in his State of the Union speech, reiterating his support for Israel while also pressuring the country to take further action to lessen suffering in the enclave.
“Israel must do its part,” Biden said. “Israel must allow more aid into Gaza and ensure that humanitarian workers aren’t caught in the crossfire.”
“To the leadership of Israel, I say this: Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip.”
“A lifelong supporter of Israel, my entire career,” Biden declared, “no one has a stronger record with Israel than I do.”
There seems to be growing public and private dissatisfaction between Biden and Netanyahu; sources recently told NBC News that Biden had started calling Netanyahu a “asshole.”
