In light of the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, Ijaw leader and elder statesman HRN Anabs Sara-Igbe has issued a grave warning. He attributes the increasing tensions to what he calls an abuse of power and a neglect of democratic norms by influential political figures.

Sara-Igbe commented on the long-term consequences of today’s political actions, cautioning, “The day you leave this office, you will either run away or they will come after you,” and warning that power is temporary and history often catches up with those who misuse authority.

He spoke against the backdrop of the ongoing face-off involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule.

He believes that the ongoing efforts to impeach and maintain pressure on the governor stem from personal ambition and desperation, rather than a dedication to good governance.

Sara-Igbe emphasized that Governor Fubara has maintained a commitment to peace and restraint, even when provoked, a stance that he claimed has kept Rivers State from descending into instability. He issued a warning, though, that if elected officials continued to be intimidated, this could lead to public backlash and increased distrust of democratic institutions.

The elder statesman reminded political leaders that holding public office does not grant them permanent power or immunity. He pointed out that numerous individuals who were powerful in Nigeria’s political history ultimately faced repercussions for their actions, encouraging those currently in office to consider the legacy they are creating.

He ended by urging restraint, dialogue, and a strict commitment to constitutional processes. He stressed that leadership should be based on accountability and serving the people, rather than on intimidation or the false perception of unchecked power.
