In relation to recent violent protests, attacks on law enforcement, destruction, and the looting of both public and private property, the Gombe State Police Command has detained 111 people.

The foreign flags flown during the disturbances are also connected to the suspects.

During a press briefing, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Buhari Abdullahi made the news on behalf of Commissioner of Police CP Hayatu Usman.

Abdullahi gave a thorough account of the state’s increasing violence, which has left police cars severely damaged and personnel with serious injuries.

Nine people were held, he claimed, since they were directly involved in attacks on police officers and looting that occurred during the protest.

According to him, significant vandalism incidences were reported to NITEL Company, Blue-J Motors, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, and Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal.

The police spokesperson emphasised the value of maintaining the rule of law and mentioned how these violent crimes negatively affect the state’s industries and communities.

Ninety-two people were held in relation to theft and vandalism, in addition to those who were arrested for attacks and looting.

Abdullahi said that some of the stolen goods had been found by the police, but he did not specify how much had been found.

He continued by saying that ten people were detained on August 5, 2024, for flying foreign flags while participating in protests.

According to Nigerian law, this act constitutes treason and was disrespectful to national symbols, according to ASP Abdullahi.

As it addressed illegal activity, the police command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, safeguarding people’s lives and property, and upholding the rights of nonviolent protestors.

According to Abdullahi, CP Usman conveyed appreciation for the assistance provided by local communities and other security forces in retrieving looted goods and re-establishing law and order in the state.

In addition to requesting calm, the command has asked locals to report any lost property to police headquarters for possible recovery and verification.
