In carrying out their responsibilities, commissioners of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) have been urged by Vice President Kashim Shettima to adhere to the values of openness, equity, and superior customer service.

In his keynote speech at the 2025 retreat for the recently appointed RMAFC members in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with the topic “Understanding the Role of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission and Other Stakeholders/Agencies in Nation Building,” the vice president gave the following guidance.

Shettima reminded the RMAFC commissioners that they are the guardians of a system that guarantees equity among the three levels of government and fosters fiscal balance throughout the federation, as represented by Mr. Ibrahim Natagwandu, his technical adviser on public debt management and revenue mobilization.

The Vice President urged the newly appointed members to devise creative plans that will reshape Nigeria’s fiscal future while outlining the Federal Government’s actions to implement targeted interventions to stabilize the economy, maximize revenue generation through enhanced tax systems, increase opportunities, and improve the standard of living for all Nigerians.

He said, “I urge the Members and staff of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to rededicate themselves to the aspirations of the government and the people, by upholding the principles of transparency, equity, and service excellence in the discharge of their duties.”

Pastor Umo Eno, the host and governor of Akwa Ibom State, also spoke and urged the Commission to investigate how oil income remittances are calculated and all the indicators that impact the 13 percent oil derivation monies for oil-producing states.

He praised the Commission’s current efforts and urged it to take more action, stating, “We know you are doing well but you can do more because as the goose that lay the golden egg we should not suffer and we believe that this Commission will rise to the occasion.”

In his message of goodwill, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, the governor of Kwara State and chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), stated that the NGF has improved internally generated revenue (IGR) by strengthening data systems throughout states.

He continued by saying that the goal of these measures was to raise their IGR and lessen their excessive reliance on federal funding.

The appointment of the recently inaugurated members, according to RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu, was not only a call to service but also required excellence, integrity, and patriotism. He emphasized that their role was crucial in ensuring that fiscal federalism is not only a constitutional ideal but also a practical mechanism for unity and development.

According to the chairman, the Commission has advanced in its efforts to develop a new formula for allocating money and a compensation package for those holding public and political office.

In cooperation with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD), and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), he added, the Commission has begun the next stage of the reconciliation and verification of revenue collections from Revenue Collecting Agencies.
