Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has reiterated that Ukraine will not accept the peace talks led by U.S. President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia.
Zelenskyy stated that any peace agreements made without Ukraine’s involvement would be considered invalid.
This statement comes as Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has sent high-ranking officials to meet with U.S. officials who are preparing for crucial talks in Saudi Arabia concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Ukraine regards any negotiations on Ukraine without Ukraine as ones that have no result, and we cannot recognise any agreements about us without us,” Zelenskyy said on Monday as the Guardian UK quoted him.
Russian and U.S. officials are currently in Riyadh for talks that are set to begin on Tuesday, with the aim of ending the nearly three-year-long war between Moscow and Ukraine. However, Kyiv and Europe have been excluded from these negotiations.
Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine would not take part in the talks. “Ukraine was not informed about this,” he remarked.
The talks come after a phone call last week between President Trump and Russian President Putin, during which they discussed the possibility of initiating negotiations to end the conflict.
This meeting would mark the first in-person discussions between the U.S. and Russia in years, following the significant downturn in relations after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Both sides are sending high-level delegations, highlighting the importance of the talks.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead Trump’s delegation, having arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday. Other U.S. representatives include Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
On the Russian side, Moscow’s top foreign policy envoy, Yuri Ushakov, along with long-serving Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, will attend the meeting in Saudi Arabia.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the meeting “will focus on preparing potential negotiations for the Ukrainian conflict settlement and organizing a meeting between the two presidents.”
In comments made on Monday morning and cited by TASS, Lavrov emphasized that Russia has no intention of making territorial concessions to Ukraine during the peace talks.
