The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has stated that he could take financial action against Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to accept a peace deal aimed at ending the war with Ukraine.
This comes after Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urged the US leader to take decisive measures if Putin does not agree to a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and the US.
The ceasefire was part of an agreement reached between US and Ukrainian officials during a meeting in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
The US, Ukraine, and Europe are now awaiting Russia’s response to the ceasefire proposal.
Trump is expected to send a team to Russia to discuss the matter with Putin by the end of the week.
The Kremlin has not yet publicly declared its stance on whether it supports an immediate ceasefire.
On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he had received “positive messages” about the ceasefire, but emphasized that “a positive message means nothing.”
Later, the White House confirmed that Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, would be traveling to Moscow later this week.
“It’s up to Russia now,” Trump said from the White House. “Our people are going to Russia right now as we speak. And hopefully we can get a ceasefire from Russia.”
Trump added that he could “do things financially that would be very bad for Russia”.
He added, however: “I don’t want to do that, because I want to get peace.”
He added, “We haven’t spoken to him yet with substance, because we just found out. We’re going to know very soon. I’ve gotten some positive messages, but a positive message means nothing.”
“This is a very serious situation. This is a situation that could lead to world war three,” when asked whether he believed the Russian leader would hold to a ceasefire.
