According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, it is not enough to rely solely on Patriot missile systems in order to effectively combat a significant quantity of Iranian drones.
As he sees it, the expense and production time of the missiles complicate competition with drones produced in large quantities.
Zelenskyy, in an interview with the New York Post, clarified that because a single Iranian “Shahed” drone costs much less than a Patriot interceptor missile, it is not feasible to depend only on these systems when facing large-scale drone assaults.
He claims that even thousands of Patriot missiles would not suffice to halt tens of thousands of drones, as the latter are much cheaper and easier to produce.
“Thousands of Patriot missiles cannot stop tens of thousands of Iranian “shaheds.” One such drone is forty times cheaper than a single Patriot missile. Therefore, in terms of production time and the cost of missiles, it is impossible to compete with drones. There simply will not be enough capacity,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine has gained significant air defense experience in its war against Russia and that it currently has most parts of a complete air defense system, with the exception of anti-ballistic capabilities.
He noted that the US possesses robust anti-ballistic systems and proposed that merging Ukraine’s air defense expertise with American capabilities might lead to a more efficient system for safeguarding nations confronted with extensive aerial threats.
Zelenskyy also cautioned that drone technology is advancing quickly and that their operational range could greatly increase in the future.
The Ukrainian leader suggested a partnership between the United States and Ukraine that centers on sharing technology, expertise, and security collaboration to address emerging threats.
