Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, the 2023 New Nigeria Peoples Democratic, or NNPP, candidate for governor, has been under fire from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for what it called a desperate smear campaign against former Governor Sule Lamido.
This follows after Ringim openly attacked Lamido’s recently published autobiography, Being True to Myself, and subtly threatened to divulge political and personal information that may “expose him to public shame.”
In a vehement statement signed by Umar Kiyari, its Jigawa State Publicity Secretary, the PDP accused Ringim of embarking on a desperate tour through local government districts to spread lies and save his collapsing political career following what the party called his “abysmal outing” in the 2023 elections.
Kiyari said: “It is quite unfortunate—and indeed shameful—that someone who has been a prominent figure in Jigawa politics since the state’s creation could only secure a little over 35,000 votes across the entire state.
“This poor showing reflects the widespread rejection of both his candidacy and the NNPP by the good people of Jigawa.”
Kiyari went on to say that Ringim’s most recent public outburst was motivated by his anger with his lack of political relevance.
“Rather than accept the verdict of the people with humility, Alhaji Ringim has chosen to mislead the public with baseless attacks, misinformation, and petty propaganda.
“His outbursts are nothing more than a reaction to a political reality he continues to deny,” he stated.
At a NNPP rally in Taura Local Government Area, Ringim launched his counterattack, accusing Lamido of falsifying facts and rewriting history in his autobiography.
He said that the former governor’s depiction of him in the Intrigues, Lies, and Fetishism chapter was detrimental in addition to being untrue.
Ringim said: “In the book, Lamido portrays himself as a trustworthy leader who never wronged anyone throughout his political career, which is far from the truth.
“If he continues to defame me, I may be forced to reveal things that will expose him to public shame.”
Ringim also disputed Lamido’s assertions that the PDP lost the 2015 gubernatorial race due to his alleged “malicious nature,” arguing that Lamido was a major factor in the party’s electoral defeat.
Political mischief during Lamido’s tenure as governor is vividly depicted in the aforementioned chapter of his autobiography.
It describes how some individuals allegedly attempted to undermine his government by creating a rift between him and his chief of staff, who was none other than Ringim.
Lamido wrote: “I was told repeatedly that Aminu was using diabolical powers to control me.
“There were even stories that he buried a black donkey within the Government House grounds to exert spiritual control over me. But I was never shaken. The only thing that would concern me was if he used such powers to steal public funds—but the records showed that not a single kobo was missing.”
Lamido also recalled addressing Ringim personally about the issue in front of the state’s finance commissioner, mockingly ordering him to “keep up your magic” because the state coffers was still intact.
However, the PDP rejected Ringim’s charges and threats, calling them “last kicks of a dying political horse,” and reaffirmed its dedication to unity throughout its ranks and credible leadership.
“We refuse to be distracted by desperate politicians looking for who to blame for their self-inflicted failures,” Kiyari concluded.
