Three years after getting married, we had our first kid. On the day of our marriage, we began attempting, but each month proved fruitless. I was disturbed. My husband’s masculinity diminished. Before the first baby was born, we visited numerous hospitals and tried local herbs. Although we were meant to be content, this infant ended up being the cause of our daily arguments.

Every day and night, she cried uncontrollably. All we could do was attend to her needs. Three different women were sent in to assist, but none of them said farewell. We believed the infant was ill. We brought her to medical facilities. They brought her back after a battery of tests and declared that she was in perfect health. Our question was, “So why won’t she keep quiet?”

She wouldn’t go to sleep at night, so we alternated carrying her. My spouse complained since he had to go for work the following morning. “I have to report to work early the following morning, so why should I be working on this job at night?”

I thought he was being careless. “I’ve taken care of her all the time you were away,” I said. What’s wrong if you take care of her so I can sleep? He screamed, “Will you go to work in the morning? I go to work tired and can’t do anything. Do you want me to lose my job?”

When the infant cried, he would get upset. He would yell at her like he was speaking to a grown-up; “Shut up! What’s wrong with you? If all kids were like you do you think parents would care for a child?”

She would occasionally cry, and we would both ignore her. However, our child wasn’t the type to be disregarded. She shouted louder the more you pretended not to care. I would use my leg to tap my hubby. He would retreat. I would use my elbow to prod him. The baby would lie there wailing, and we would both wake up and quarrel.

“This is what you go through when you secure favour from the devil,” he said, accusing me of going to a fetish to get the child. Say the truth, which fetish did you visit behind me to get the baby?”

He mentioned he was leaving one day after packing his belongings in a little backpack. “If you dare leave this house, you’ll never come back again. It will be the end of our marriage.”

The infant had only been born for eight months. We took her to a nearby tiny nursery because I had started working as well. The owner of the school informed us that she was unable to keep the infant since she was constantly crying. She informed us, “Because of her, I don’t have extra hands to help other kids.” She never stops yelling.

My husband said, “So be it,” in response to my threat of divorce that day. I won’t come again. Live with the seed you got from the devil.”

To stop him from leaving, I stood in the doorway. I almost got thrown out of his way by him. While the baby was crying in my arms, I sobbed and lost it. I pleaded with him to stay with us.

I urged him not to leave us since he was all we had. I sat in the doorway and stared up at him. The infant stared at him and stopped wailing. He joined us on the floor. Both of us gazed at the infant. “Are we sure we will want another one after this?” he questioned me.

We now have three children. After the first, we had two sober and jovial ones. Only when it was necessary did they cry. At the age of two, the first child ceased sobbing.

That day, my husband stayed. Rather, we felt energised to continue, to be the parents we had always envisioned ourselves to be. When we observe her having fun now, We proudly gaze upon her as though she hadn’t been the child who almost brought our marriage to an end. She is now seven and doing well.

Our lovely marriage was on the verge of ending before we even became parents. We are grateful that we didn’t desert one another. “So why didn’t you leave that day when you packed up to leave?”

He answered, “You said I’m all you had. That statement made me feel like I was abandoning a ship as a captain, leaving everyone else to drown. It also showed how I was appreciated. My feet got magnetized to the floor immediately you said that.”

I had to swallow my pride and plead with him to stay. Imagine if I let pride get in the way.
