The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has expressed deep dissatisfaction with various socio-economic issues affecting students across Nigeria. At a press conference in Lagos, NAUS National Vice President, Mr Tiamiyu Olayinka, highlighted the challenges students face, including the recent hike in telecom tariffs, insecurity on and around campuses, and incessant power outages.

“The alarming state of insecurity in the country and in and around campuses has turned our school environments into jungles where robbery, harassment, and kidnapping take place unchallenged, putting our lives and property in danger,” Olayinka stated.

He also mentioned poor welfare conditions in hostels and academic environments, as well as the ongoing industrial action by clinical lecturers in some federal universities. “We are also faced with the problem of an epileptic power supply, which has rendered our laboratories, libraries, and ICT centres no-go areas, especially at nights.

The students’ union demanded immediate action from relevant authorities to address these issues. “We want urgent measures to be put in place on campuses to stabilise power supply, address our welfare, particularly in terms of hostel renovation, and provide good healthcare services,” Olayinka said.

They also called for the reversal of the telecom tariffs hike and enhanced security measures to guarantee safety on campuses. “Even though we are committed to peace sustenance on our campuses and in the nation at large, we are also ready to take decisive action if our concerns are ignored by the relevant authorities.”

The students emphasised that their future cannot continue to be at risk due to neglect and insensitivity from those in power. “The future of Nigerian students cannot continue to be kept under risk due to neglect and insensitivity, especially of the people holding political powers.
