Nigeria-US security ties: What Washington’s latest move means

The United States is preparing to withdraw about 200 American military personnel currently deployed in Nigeria.

The troops were sent to the country earlier in 2026 as part of efforts to support operations against Islamist militant groups.

According to a report by The New York Times, the withdrawal is expected to be completed by the end of September.

However, the report clarified that the planned drawdown would not signal the end of Washington’s security partnership with Abuja.

A smaller contingent of American trainers and intelligence personnel is expected to remain in Nigeria to continue supporting operations led by Nigerian forces.

The development follows a joint military operation conducted by US and Nigerian forces in the Lake Chad Basin, which resulted in the death of Abu Bilal al-Minuki, whom US officials identified as a senior Islamic State operative and the group’s second-in-command globally.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon’s Africa Command, Colonel Becky Heyse, described the joint approach as effective.

“Our recent joint efforts in Nigeria are a prime example of how this tailored, temporary footprint can yield significant security returns,” she said.

The New York Times reported that the planned withdrawal followed Washington’s assessment that the larger deployment had accomplished the main objectives for which it was initially established.

The United States had expanded its military presence in Nigeria in February following months of increasing security concerns.

Since then, American and Nigerian forces have collaborated on intelligence-driven operations targeting extremist groups in the North-East.

The planned reduction in US troop numbers is therefore expected to represent a shift toward a smaller and more targeted American security presence rather than a complete withdrawal from Nigeria.
