2027: Tinubu’s aide makes fresh prediction about Atiku’s political future

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has suggested that the 2027 presidential election could represent the final opportunity for African Democratic Congress, ADC, candidate Atiku Abubakar to pursue the presidency.

Bwala linked Atiku’s promise to restore fuel subsidy to his belief that the next election may be his last chance to contest for the country’s highest political office.

President Tinubu scrapped the fuel subsidy shortly after assuming office during his inauguration in 2023.

However, Atiku has promised to reinstate the subsidy regime if elected president, a position that has generated considerable debate across the country.

Bwala argued that Atiku’s decision was influenced by the possibility that he may not have another opportunity to seek the presidency after 2027.

The presidential aide also suggested that Atiku may feel there is little left to lose following the removal of the subsidy under the Tinubu administration.

Posting on X, Bwala wrote: “Since 2027 is likely to be his last chance to seek the office of the president, he decided to gamble on the populist rhetoric of ‘I will bring back the fuel subsidy.’ He presumed that, after all, there is nothing to lose.

“The only problem is that, to run a populist campaign, you must first ensure that you are popular with the people.”
