Terrorists have threatened to bomb the compound, according to Garba Muhammad, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security.

At a public hearing on a measure to create the Legislative Security Directorate, which aims to improve security management and safeguard MPs, personnel, and guests at the country’s parliament, Garba made this revelation.

He claims that the complex has been dealing with security issues, such as thefts of cars and motorcycles, damage, phony identification documents, and infiltration by unregistered guests.

A similar occurrence was documented on May 4, 2021, when MPs were alerted by security to a planned Boko Haram attack on the National Assembly complex and other government and VIP sites in Abuja, according to ZINGTIE.

Following the alert, security experts demanded that the federal government strengthen its protection of national assets and infrastructure, and the National Assembly restricted members’ presence on the grounds for safety.

As a preventative step, the congressman demanded that the complex be fortified immediately.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly.

“Legislators are exposed to threats from constituents and others who gain easy access to their offices without any formal appointment.

“It is obvious that with the ongoing security challenges, if proper measures are not taken, it will truncate the legislative activities in the National Assembly.

“If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary at all — and that will destabilise legislative procedure, democracy, and the stability of the system, and our nation at large,” Garba said.
