The recent admission of retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai to the Kano State Social Democratic Party (SDP) has been hailed by the party as a significant boost to its strength and possibilities for the future.

Alhaji Ali Shettima, the state’s SDP chairman, was hopeful that the move would improve the party’s appeal and structure in front of next elections during a news conference in Kano on Friday.

“We are excited to welcome former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha into our great party, the SDP,” Shettima stated.

“We regard their entry as a significant boost to our party’s membership as we are making efforts to strengthen its structure and prepare for future elections.”

He dismissed worries that Bala Gwagwarwa, the party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, had recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), undermining the party.

“The party remains strong and united, despite Gwagwarwa’s exit,” Shettima said.

“His claims that he joined the APC alongside the entire structure of the party are absolutely untrue.”

He also disputed rumors that ward chairmen and local government officials had defected to the APC, stressing that SDP executives at all levels are still party faithful.

“As you have seen, our party executives, including the Director-General of Gwagwarwa’s campaign, are still with us. The claims that they all left with him are false. He left alone,” Shettima insisted.
