Embu County resident Victoria has described the agonizing experience of being denied marital rights and going through years of violence in her marriage. She described how her spouse had once given her money and advised her to look for another man to meet her requirements.

Victoria, who was born and raised in Embu, met her future husband in college. Tension with her family resulted from the couple’s marriage without her parents’ approval. They had three children throughout the years, but Victoria’s marriage was characterized by severe control and physical abuse, including prohibitions on interacting with neighbors.

Even when they were going in the same direction, her husband frequently forbade her from using the car he had bought. Any attempt at closeness was treated with hostility, and he often returned home late at night. He once gave her 10,000 shillings and instructed her to “stop disturbing him” by sleeping with another man for three days.

In response to these ongoing mistreatment, Victoria collected all of her possessions, including fifty thousand shillings from the home, and moved to the closest town with her kids. To support her family and restore her independence, she established a company and rented a house there.
