World football governing body FIFA has issued an official explanation following the controversial goal scored by Switzerland in their 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against Qatar.

The debate centered around Switzerland’s first goal, which was converted by Breel Embolo from the penalty spot after Remo Freuler was brought down in the box following a challenge involving Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.

However, the incident quickly generated controversy as television replays appeared to suggest that Freuler may have been in an offside position before the foul occurred.

Although the situation was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee, VAR officials ruled that Freuler was onside, allowing the penalty decision to stand.

The absence of the usual semi-automated offside graphics during the review raised questions among fans and analysts watching the match.

In response, FIFA disclosed that the system responsible for producing the offside visualizations experienced a technical failure at the time of the incident.

The football body acknowledged that the technology used to generate the semi-automated offside images was unavailable, which explains why no replay graphic was shown to viewers during the VAR check.

FIFA’s clarification comes amid widespread discussion surrounding the decision and the role of technology in one of the tournament’s earliest controversial moments.

An official statement read: “During the Qatar vs. Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. The issue was quickly resolved.

“The workflow of the VAR was not affected by this issue and followed the normal procedure in checking the on-field decision. The lines used by the VAR to check the position of the relevant players did not show the attacking player to be in an offside position in either of the two situations immediately before the penalty decision.”
