What The Finance Minister Said About New Taxes Has Nigerians Talking

The Federal Government has stated that it has no plans to introduce additional taxes, stressing instead that the country requires a larger number of tax-compliant citizens.

The clarification was made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on Thursday during a meeting with a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, CITN, in Abuja.

Oyedele commended the institute for initiating a National Tax Awareness Day and acknowledged its support for the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reform agenda.

The minister urged the institute to intensify public education efforts, noting that many Nigerians still perceive taxation as a mechanism through which the government merely collects money from citizens.

He reiterated that the government’s focus is not on raising tax rates but on expanding the tax net to ensure that all qualified taxpayers fulfill their obligations.

“We are still not getting enough revenue from taxes.

“It is not about increasing taxes but making sure that those who are supposed to pay tax pay. We want to promote fairness in tax administration,” he said.
