Alhaji Hassan Ardo, the first chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State and a former Nigerian ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, has attacked Governor Agbu Kefas, accusing his administration of poor performance and poor governance.
According to Ardo, President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit, which was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, revealed the state’s lack of noticeable progress under the two-year-old Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government.
Days before Governor Kefas celebrated his second year in office, Ardo told reporters in Jalingo on Thursday that he was disappointed the vice president had no important project to commission during the visit.
“Presidential visits to states are usually marked by the commissioning of people-oriented projects. But in Taraba, the only project presented was the renovation of an airport originally built over a decade ago. That speaks volumes about the state of governance in Taraba,” Ardo said.
He stated that rather than tackling the major infrastructure issues that the people face, the Kefas administration has placed more emphasis on personal indulgences, such as remodeling the Government House and hotels.
He gave the example of the Namnai Bridge, which collapsed more than a year ago and has not been restored despite public pledges.
“That bridge is far more important to the daily lives of our people than the airport. It’s shameful that nothing has been done months after the governor claimed the contract for its reconstruction had been awarded. Meanwhile, communities remain cut off, and residents suffer severe economic losses”, Ardo lamented.
Ardo argued that the majority of visible initiatives merely serve the governor’s comfort rather than the general welfare, and he challenged the state government to demonstrate any significant projects started and finished under Kefas.
Ardo praised President Tinubu’s attempts to draw investors to Taraba, especially in the agricultural sector, but added that the visit validated long-standing complaints about the state government’s performance.
“When we speak, they say it’s politics. But this visit has vindicated those of us who have consistently pointed out the failures of this administration,” he added.
To lessen the impact of what he dubbed the state’s PDP-led government’s “poor governance,” Ardo urged the federal government to establish special intervention initiatives in Taraba.
