In his final month in office, President Biden announced that he was converting the death sentences of 37 of the 40 inmates awaiting federal execution to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Among these inmates were nine convicted of murdering fellow inmates, four for murders committed during bank robberies, and one who killed a prison guard.
As he gets ready to succeed the Democrat in the White House, US President-elect Donald Trump has criticised incumbent Joe Biden for commuting the sentences of nearly every American federal prisoner on death row.
As Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform, “Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our country,”
“When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening,” Trump said.
In the face of Republican Trump’s indications that he might reinstate the death sentence, Biden was under pressure to take additional action before he left the White House on January 20.
Three guys were left out of the move: a white supremacist who killed nine Black churchgoers in 2015, a gunman who killed eleven Jewish worshippers in 2018, and one of the Boston Marathon bombers in 2013.
