Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has reached his 65th birthday, but he regrets that he is unable to celebrate because of the extreme poverty in the nation.

When special adviser on media and publicity Linus Obogo and special adviser on general responsibilities Barrister Ekpenyong Akiba linked him to make comments on his new age, he talked on a Sparkling FM Radio program that was listened to in Calabar.

Otu said, “I cannot in all sincerity celebrate my birthday with such expected fanfare in the midst of current hardships.

“There’s much sufferings in the country due to current hyperinflation. It would be insensitive to do so. That’s why it is a low-key event.”

He conveyed his appreciation to the state’s citizens for their well wishes and prayers.

According to the governor, his administration deliberately aimed at impacting people.

“I have occupied many positions in this country. In all, I have never disappointed. So I vow that I shall not disappoint the people of Cross River State as their governor, by the grace of God. There’ll be value addition.”

He revealed that he will begin hosting frequent town hall meetings in each of the state’s three senatorial districts starting the next year.

“It’ll enable the people to speak with me directly; ask me no-hold-barred questions, so that they will hear my responses directly.”
